Please tell me this is a true story, because I'm crying now over it.

Yeah, it's true. It happened in the early 90s.

What an amazing gesture, Libertine. Thanks for this!

There are some philosophies that insist a good deed is best done in quiet triumph. They believe that making a good deed known by the one who did the good deed, somehow detracts from its intrinsic value. It serves the best purpose when discovered and revealed to others by an uninvolved individual as when one pays homage to the works of others.

Where would Christianity be if the works of Christ were looked at in that way?

I say God bless you. May you find many such ways to help those in need and share it with the world my friend. There is simply not enough good news in this world. Vox is a good place to look for it.

It might be smaller, but it would likely be closer to the original message. I'm probably overstating the obvious in what you have implied, but I do indeed seem to remember that prayers, fasts, and other forms of worship were emphasized as a private matter and not meant to be broadcast for the praises of the masses.

Not that I would say Libertine has gone askance of that-- rather, I think he is encouraging us to do likewise ;) Speaking of that, Libertine, congratulations on making the [life is good] page-- may VOXers be inspired to do as you have done.

It is a great story filled with moral lessons about the joy of giving.

Well done. You and your kind gift made a little boy's Christmas that bit more special.. and kept a little of the magic alive!

“When he evades domestication, he also flees the constraints that seem to go hand in hand with marriage. He reminds wistful husbands, ensnarled in the claims of wives, children, and creditors, that the Latin root of ‘libertine’ is libertus -- a freed slave”
